June Picnic

A June picnic is traditional for many events; family reunions, church gatherings, the end of children's spring sports season, and to celebrate the start of summer. Many facilities have outdoor space that would be ideal for a picnic without having to travel.

Activities:

Try having a picnic auction to get things going for June. Plan the auction date ahead of time and post notices. Be sure that the rules are included in the notices and explain them again at the start of the auction. Arrange for box lunches for the day of the picnic. Limit the number of participants for the picnic. Have the picnic with the winning bidders.

If you would like everyone to participate, auction the set up (napkins, plates, cups, plasticware) have these sets in several different colors, enough for everyone. Put numbers on the sets hidden from the participants which go with the tables, e.g. all number 3 sets sit at the blue covered table regardless of the color of their set. This way the group members can't bid to be at a certain table based on color and they are mingled at least for the meal. Keep a list of who won which set and the numbers. This activity is a good ice breaker and also good for working on socialization skills.

Adults, adolescents and older children usually understand and enjoy auctions. Our TRI Auction kit includes; fun money, numbered cards and instructions for ten different auctions. Find it at your favorite activity retailers site

For an intergenerational activity, Crayola.com has picnic pictures that can be printed out for children to color (Crayola). Have the children color pages for the group, post them in the room and share stories about picnics.

Try having the group make and taste old fashioned lemonade made with real lemons. Find several recipes online to try.

Ask the group to share what their ideal picnic would be like. Have a reminiscence group about picnics and summer.

Father's day is June 14 have the picnic auction and picnic just for men and the ladies can watch a special "chic" flick that afternoon.

While everyone relaxes after the games and the food read some of the proverbs and epigrams in "A Closed Mouth Gathers No Feet" from Hometown Humor (available from Amazon) to give everyone a chuckle and something to talk about.

It is of interest to note that while some dolphins are reported to have learned English -- up to fifty words used in correct context -- no human being has been reported to have learned dolphinese.
