Computer Capers

 

There is an abundance of fun online group activities like: games, treasure hunts, cards, calendars and web tours. Try the free one here and visit again soon for a different one.  These are potentially good for nursing home group activities or activities for the elderly and other age groups to try on the computer. Happy Birthday! to Tim Berners-Lee inventor of the World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee was born on June 8, 1955 in London, England. You can read his bio at this link from MIT, Tim Berners Lee Thanks to Tim we can do a lot on the web like take tours to visit just about anywhere. 

Why don't we take a little web tour to England, Tim's home country, and visit some of the sites.  London is the capital of England and all of England has a population of about 48 million people. One of the most popular sites to see in London is Big Ben this tall bell tower with a clock landmark is known the world over. Another London landmark known the world over is the Tower of London, located in East London it has a fascinating history and is where the crown jewels are kept. The link above takes you to a virtual tour site of the tower and also has a children's tour (hint: this site has music so turn down your pc speaker volume ahead of time). What's happening on a London street right now? Here's a web cam view of Oxford Circus that's updated every thirty seconds.  Britain Express an online travel and information source has a virtual tour of England  and one of Wales you can take. Let's not forget to take a look at some of the royal residences; Buckingham Palace, Balmoral Castle and Windsor Castle are a few of the ones you can see here: Royal Residences. Stonehenge is one of those strange places that people enjoy visiting and speculating about, so why don't we go to visit Stonehenge. Finally lets head out to Bath, a spa city with mineral springs which became a popular destination beginning in 1702. Here are some pictures posted by a visitor there; BATH.  

Activities:  

Take the web tour and talk about similarities and differences between the US and Britain.   

Have a formal tea in the British style.  

Watch a movie set in England while you enjoy your tea and crumpets.   

Ask the group to share their experiences if they have traveled to England.   

Have a birthday party for the Web, Tim Berners Lee and the group members born in June. Talk about how the web has changed the way things are done.

Use the outline "You are going on a trip" from Storylines to have the group tell a unique story about travel.
